Rocker G Livestock- New Town & Country Stables
Town and Country Stables and Rocker G Livestock have a long history with the sport of rodeo. Bud's dad Dee Gibson started Saddle City in 1959 which had an old west main street, complete with shoot outs and a rodeo arena where they would put on western shows and rodeos. Legendary cowboys, Jim Shoulders and Casey Tibbs are two of the many world champion cowboys to compete in those rodeos. Along with Amy Rich and Bud's mother Frances, Bud started Town and Country Stables in 1964 and he set about to make a world class horse facility and rodeo arena.
The first rodeo was produced at Town and Country in 1972. For many years the residents of Hawaii were treated to two rodeos a year at the stables. The 4,500 seat bleachers were also at standing room only. Father's Day weekend and Thanksgiving Weekend were always set aside for cowboys and cowgirls! Famous rodeo producer, Cotton Rosser, came to Hawaii with his Flying U rodeo company to help promote rodeo in Hawaii and he and Bud became lifelong friends.
Throughout the years cowboys such as Donny Gay, Lane Frost, Ty Murray, Tuff Hedeman and Jim Sharp have competed at the rodeos. Some of them competing in the uniquely Hawaiian event of Double Mugging.
Double Mugging is an event where a cowboy ropes a steer and a man on the ground attempts to bull dog the animal to the ground. The cowboy on the horse dismounts and helps the cowboy with the steer. The object is to get the steer to the ground and tied. Time stops when the steer is tied or when the cowboys have had enough! Many rodeo fans come just to watch the Double Mugging. With Bud's stock it's always a good event for the audience. If the cowboys get lucky and are able to tie the animal they can win one of the highest payouts at the rodeo.
Another event that is a crowd pleaser is the Match Barrels. Two riders race against each other while doing a barrel pattern. Most races end in a horse race to the finish line.
The rodeos also had traditional events such as bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc and roping.
